Junior presents molecular research at national symposium
Mason ‘20 earned fourth in Tennesse and gave an oral presentation on understanding thyroid cancer in New Mexico.

Last summer, I worked in the lab of USN parent and Vanderbilt University Medical Center pathologist Dr. Vivian Weiss. My research project focused on understanding thyroid cancer at a molecular level. I submitted a research paper describing this project to the Tennessee Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, and I was selected to give an oral presentation in March at its 54th Annual JSHS Tennessee Regional meeting.
High School Biology Teachers Dr. Kristin Droege and Ms. Anne Dervan were my USN sponsors; Dr. Droege attended the Tennessee JSHS meeting in Knoxville with me. I was the fourth place winner out of 19 high school students across Tennessee who gave oral presentations.
I also gave an oral presentation at the 57th Annual National JSHS held on Wednesday, April 24 through Sunday, April 28 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Tennessee delegation did not win any awards, but it was a really great experience.
